The City of Newport Swimming Club Championships Awards Evening – Saturday 6th October 2012

The club held its annual awards evening where some of the swimmers were recognised for their achievements.

A special trophy was presented this year called the Steven Lewis Memorial Award. This award had been kindly donated by the family of Steven Lewis who was a swimmer for the club.

Steven sadly passed away of cancer in December last year, at the age of just 32. Steven was a very successful swimmer, especially in the 400/800/1500m events, achieving success at regional and Welsh national level. After he finished with competitive swimming, Steven became a qualified lifeguard, swim teacher and then eventually became a Duty Manager at the Active Living Centre. He was also in charge of running the Newport Schools Swim Programme, and was responsible for teaching thousands of children (over the years) to learn to swim, many of whom have since joined the club.

This award recognises the most improved boy and girl of any age in the Junior Development squad. The club is very proud to commemorate Steven with this award and is now able to acknowledge the hard-working Junior Development swimmers by presenting them with this trophy. Unfortunately, Steven’s parents were unable to attend, but were represented by his brother Mathew and girlfriend. Barrie Swift, Steven’s former coach, presented the award. Other awards of the evening went to Ben Slade for the Ken Edwards Award for the most improved in the Dolphin Squad. Top Girls within their age groups were Paige Simmons, Emme Thomas, Emily Peacock and Elizabeth Smith. Top Boys were Iwan Edwards, William Ryley, Cameron Brown and Ross Andrews.

Other achievements of the year included Cameron Brown, who set a new Welsh Junior long course record in the 200m Freestyle at the ASA British Youth Championships. He achieved a fantastic time of 1.54.86 seconds.

Also Jonathan Eke set a new British short course record in the S10 disability 800m Freestyle at the City of Newport Club Championships achieving a time of 9.06.78 seconds.

Chairman, Mr Mark Campbell commented “The Club, through a combination of paid and volunteer resources continues to provide a competitive and fun environment where swimmers of all ages can swim to the best of their ability and, as evidenced by some of our recent record breaking results, are producing results of exceptional quality.”
