Burns Meet 2015

Twelve swimmers represented the City of Newport at the Burns Meet, held in Ponds Forge Sheffield, during January 2015. The Burns Meet is a high level open meet which attracts many of the top swimmers from across the UK. The meet provided an excellent opportunity to race outside of Wales against quality opposition and acted as a very good long course preparation meet ahead of the National Championships (Welsh and British) which are to take place in April.

The swimmers representing Newport were: Connor Acland, Cameron Brown, William Ryley, Lewis Waters, Brython Sansom, Jacob Beetham, Aiden Bryce, Emme Thomas, Sioned Collingbourne, Erin Bryce, Cerys Coley and Megan Allison.

Almost all of the swimmers who took part recorded personal best long course performances, which was extremely pleasing considering the training phase they are currently in.

There were also plenty of medals won by the team. Megan Allison came away with an impressive 4 golds (100+200 free and 100+200 fly), Erin Bryce took 3 golds in dominating the backstroke events, Cerys Coley continued her impressive form to claim 2 golds and a silver in the Breaststroke events, Lewis Waters swam brilliantly for a gold and a silver in the 100 and 200 Breaststroke respectively, and Jacob Beetham won a well deserved bronze in the 50m freestyle.

In addition to their medals; Lewis, Erin and Cerys also managed to acheive the incredibly tough qualification times for the British Swimming Championships (World Championship trials) in April (London Olympic Pool) and will now join Cameron Brown in representing the club at the premier swimming championships in Great Britain.

Newport swimmers excel at Welsh SC

Competition for 2014 drew to a close at the Welsh Short Course Championships in Swansea over the final weekend in December. The meet was of the highest standard, with many of the top teams from across the UK taking part (including huge teams from Loughborough and Bath Universities).

A team of approximately 30 swimmers (from the National Performance and National Potential squads) represented the City of Newport at the meet, almost all of whom produced massive personal best performances.  The team won a impressive amount of medals and placed an even larger number of swimmers into finals throughout the four days of competition in an excellent overall team effort.

There were however some standout swimmers, who produced exceptional performances that deserve special mention:

Cerys Coley dominated the Breaststroke events, winning a hattrick of gold medals in the 50m (33.6s), 100m (1.11.8s) and 200m (2.33.0s)events.

Erin Bryce produced some brilliant swims to win gold in the 100m Backstroke (1.03.0s), gold in the 200m Backstroke (2.15.3s) and bronze in the 50m Backstroke (29.9s).

Lewis Waters produced a highly impressive set of swims to win gold in both the 100m (1.07.8s) and 200m (2.26.3s)Breaststroke, silver in the 50m Breaststroke (32.1s), and bronze in the 200m IM (2.15.0s).

William Ryley recorded some big pb’s to win silver in both the 200m (1.57.8s) and 400m Freestyle (4.11.9s). Will picked up his third silver of the meet in the 100m IM (1.03.1s).

Jonathan Eke, swimming in the para-swimming muti classification event, won gold medals in both the 50m (26.2s)and 100m Freestyle (56.5s). These performances now place Jonathan at the top of the European rankings for the 50m, 100m, and 400m freestyle events in the s10 catergory. An excellent acheivement!

Alice Manship produced the suprise swim of the meet, to win bronze in the 100m Breaststroke (1.18.2s), after qualifying for the final in 8th spot.

Cameron Brown, competiting against many of the UK’s top senior swimmers,  was extremely unlucky to end the meet without a medal, after producing the fastest series of swims ever by a City of Newport swimmers. His times of 50.6s for the 100m Freestyle (6th place), 1.48.5s for the 200m freestyle (4th place), and 4.49.6s for the 400m Freestyle (4th place) were truely world class swims for an 18 year old.
