ASA National Youth and Senior Championships 2014. Ponds Forge, Sheffield.

The City of Newport SC was very proud to take a large team of 11 swimmers to the prestigious ASA National Youth and Senior Championships in August 2014. Qualification to compete at these championships is extremely difficult to achieve and only the very best swimmers from across Great Britain hit the standards to compete.

The swimmers who competed for the City of Newport were Jonathan Eke, Cameron Brown, Matthew Jayne, Connor Acland, William Ryley, Tristan Cuer, Liam Walsh, Erin Bryce, Emily Peacock, Cerys Coley and Hannah Beetham. A special mention must also be made to James Carlyle, who helped the men’s relay team qualify for the 4 x 100 freestyle, but was unable to attend the championships.

To perform at your very best under the extreme pressure of National championships is a very difficult thing to do, which makes the statistic of over 90% of swims from City of Newport swimmers being personal best performances a very impressive one.

All of our swimmers performed at a very high level, however certain swimmers deserve a special mention for they outstanding performances.

Jonathan Eke became National Champion and Gold medallist for the first time in his career, taking the senior men’s 400m S10 freestyle title in an excellent 4.28s. He followed this by making the final of the 50m freestyle, and ended the week by picking up his second medal (silver) in the 100m freestyle in a very fast 57.6s. Well done Jonathan on the truly excellent performance. The Club are very proud indeed!

Cameron Brown produced a series of outstanding swims. Competing a year out of age in the 17/18 years mens’s events, Cameron produced a personal best on every event he swam and qualified for 3 finals in the 200m freestyle (1.51.5s), 400m freestyle (3.57s) and the 200 IM. Cameron was very unlucky not to bring home medals missing out on the bronze by jusy 0.2s on both the 200 and 400m freestyle

Cerys Coley and Erin Bryce produced a series of excellent swims in the Breaststroke and backstroke events respectively, with Cerys qualifying for the semi-final of the 100m after a dramatic swim off (Cerys missed qualification for the final by 0.05s) and Erin qualifying for the 200m backstroke semi. Both girls were competing a year out of age in the 15/16 years age group.
